Cydonia oblonga, commonly known as quince, is a fruit tree species of the Rosaceae family. It is native to Iran and Turkey, but now widely propagated in other regions including Europe, North America, and Australia. The shrub-like plant grows up to 5m tall and bears small fragrant flowers ranging from white to pink. The fruit produced by Cydonia oblonga is hard and astringent when raw with yellowish-green skin but turns yellow when ripened and usually consumed cooked or processed into jams, jellies, or syrups. Its high pectin content makes it valuable as an ingredient in confectioneries while its wood is favored for making tool handles and musical instruments such as drums due to its hardness and elasticity. Cydonia oblonga has also been found to contain antioxidants beneficial for protecting against various diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases making it an excellent addition not only for its culinary uses but also for health benefits in human nutrition.
