Quercus petraea, commonly known as the sessile oak, is a deciduous tree species native to Europe and Western Asia. It grows slowly but can reach a height of up to 40 meters at maturity with a broad spreading crown. The bark is rough and textured with deep fissures while the leaves are dark green and deeply lobed providing an attractive autumnal display. They thrive in well-draining acidic soils in full sun or partial shade, for example on rocky hillsides or poor stony soils. One unique feature of Q.petraea is its acorn size and flat conical shape, which sets it apart from other oak trees that usually have rounder acorns. This species is valuable for timber production due to its hard-wearing wood that is used in construction, flooring, furniture making, amongst others. In addition to its aesthetic appeal and economic importance, Q.petraea supports biodiversity by hosting various insect species and providing habitat for nesting birds such as tits and woodpeckers.
